In case you’re diagnosed with scoliosis, don’t worry. There are plenty of things you can do to remain pain-free. However, it’ll require some effort on your side, as you have to give additional attention to your overall health.

Keep reading to learn what the dos and don’ts of keeping scoliosis at bay are. You can employ various helpful tips that’ll prevent your curvature from increasing.

Scoliosis Rehab Do's

The following dos will keep you on the right track with your scoliosis rehab efforts.

1. Consult a Professional

First thing’s first, when you notice that you or your child are experiencing any sort of back problems, visit a professional. Here at Align Clinic, we know that the sooner you start with scoliosis rehab, the better.

Only after you’ve seen a professional will you know what’s the right approach for your condition.

2. Stick with Your Therapy
Following your therapy guidelines is the best way to ensure that your curvature will remain the same or even improve. Unfortunately, many people fail to stick to the new routine. There are several things to keep in mind.

If you require wearing an adult scoliosis brace, you must follow the regimen and wear it regularly. They’re an effective method of treating scoliosis.

If your curvature does not require a scoliosis brace, you still might need some other form of therapy. Another effective way is the Schroth Method. Going through those exercises is very beneficial for scoliosis patients. Therefore, make sure to follow all the guidelines.

3. Adjust Your Nutrition
Your spine’s the foundation of your whole body’s health. That’s why you should do everything that’s in your power to make it easier for it to function. As there’s an association between body weight and spinal diseases, you should begin with healthy nutrition to lose any excess weight.

Simply start following your caloric intake, and you’ll quickly start losing weight. But you should also include some type of activity to keep your whole body more robust.

4. Keep Moving
There’s a wide range of activities that’ll help you keep your back pain-free. One of your daily goals should include some type of physical activity. Of course, you should opt for low impact activities that cause no additional stress to your spine.

Some of those include:

  • Swimming
  • Yoga
  • Walking
  • Cycling

Swimming is an excellent option due to its activation of spine muscles. On top of that, it’s a low impact activity without any unnecessary pressure on your spine.

Yoga is another appealing option due to its nature as it activates all muscles surrounding your spine. Like swimming, Yoga is a low impact activity.

Walking is an excellent way to keep your whole body active, and it’s highly underrated.

Take some time to hop on your bicycle and go for a drive. It’s another low impact activity that’ll keep the blood flowing.

Besides keeping your body in motion, regular exercise will help you keep your weight in check.

5. Believe in the Process and Stay Patient
Following all the above tips might be overwhelming at first. Any change takes time, and the key is to remain persistent. Combating scoliosis is an ongoing process, and it takes a lot of effort and consistency.

Scoliosis Rehab Dont's

void doing the following things, as they’ll impair your rehab efforts.

1. Sitting for Long Periods
Sitting for long periods has become normal behavior for millions of people. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of how devastating it’s for our whole body. That’s especially true for people with back pain.

If you’re working in a job requiring a lot of sitting, it’s essential to take sitting breaks. Besides the breaks, you should also sit appropriately. Explore our guide if you belong to those who sit for hours at their workplace. It’ll help you adjust your sitting position.

A simple rule to follow is to get up from your chair every 45-50 minutes for 5-10 minutes to move around.

2. Be Inactive
Regular activity is essential. No matter how severe your scoliosis is, you should keep moving throughout the day as much as possible. That’s the only way to ensure that your core muscles are working.

That way, you’ll keep your condition from worsening.

3. Continue with the Same Lifestyle
Keep in mind that your scoliosis curvature can seriously deteriorate over time. It’s in your best interest to adopt new lifestyle changes to prevent that from happening. Once you visit a scoliosis clinic, you’ll immediately learn what kind of behaviors are your biggest enemies.

For example, did you know that smoking can affect your back pain?

Slowly start adopting one new habit after another, and you’ll steer in a new direction where you’ll get to keep your scoliosis in check.

4. Stop Your Scoliosis Rehab Efforts
Scoliosis is a condition that becomes a part of your life. No matter how demanding scoliosis rehab becomes in the future, it’s crucial never to give up. Failing to do so will result in the deterioration of your scoliosis curve.

5. Avoid Certain Activities
Even though you can continue enjoying a wide range of exercises and activities, there are those you should avoid. These activities create additional pressure on your spine, leading to back pain and increasing curvature over time.

  • Weightlifting
  • Running
  • Gymnastics and Dancing

When it comes to weightlifting, you can enjoy many exercises, but using low and medium weights. Forget about any heavy weight lifting, as it’ll put too much pressure on your spine.

Additionally, running a high-impact activity that causes the spine to compress. That’s not good for anyone with scoliosis.

Gymnastics and dancing often include sudden movements such as jumping. That simply puts more pressure on the spine.
